Charlestown Man Sentenced for Defrauding Employer

Timothy M. Morrison, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, announced that MICHAEL PAUL HOLCOMB, 25, Charlestown, Indiana, was sentenced to 6 months home detention yesterday by U.S. District Judge David F. Hamilton following his guilty plea to mail fraud. This case was the result of an investigation by the United States Secret Service.

HOLCOMB was employed as an Asset Protection Associate at the Sears Department Store at the Green Tree Mall in Clarkesville, Indiana. As an Asset Protection Associate, HOLCOMB's duties were to watch for shoplifters and detect employee theft. From January 2000 through January 2001, HOLCOMB accessed the cash registers through his employee number and falsified approximately 17 fraudulent transaction returns on non-existent merchandise returned by non-existent customers. HOLCOMB then had the checks sent to his address where he obtained the checks and deposited them into his two personal bank accounts. HOLCOMB obtained approximately $26,000.00 through these fraudulent transactions.

According to Assistant United States Attorney Gayle L. Helart, who prosecuted the case for the government, Judge Hamilton also imposed 5 years probation. During the time of probation, HOLCOMB must repay Sears in the amount of $25,750.36, and not open any new credit lines without permission.

No Safe Amount of Alcohol for Drivers

While there is no “safe” amount of alcohol for drivers to consume, most people can drink moderately and drive legally when they reach the legal limit of .08 BAC. A 170-pound male typically would have to consume more than four drinks in one hour on an empty stomach to reach a BAC of .08. A 135-pound female typically would have to consume three drinks in the same time frame.
