The Senate Has Endorsed Finch's Booster Seat Bill to Improve Car Safety for Children

The Senate has unanimously approved the bill introduced by Senator Bill Finch (D-Bridgeport) that outlines new booster seat belt requirements to improve safety for children traveling in motor vehicles.

This is the second year in a row Senator Finch has introduced the legislation that will require the use of booster seats in motor vehicles for children under the age of six years old and weighing less than sixty pounds. It would also require the use of seat belts for passengers in the rear seat of a motor vehicle.

"The leading cause of death of children over a year old is motor vehicle accidents, and our state law has been silent on how to help protect children once they are over four years old, and this booster seat legislation will help to rectify that problem," said Senator Finch. "The bill can have a positive impact on efforts to protect children from serious injury in motor vehicle accidents."

"The Senate has voted in favor of improving motor vehicle safety for the children of Connecticut," said Senator Finch. "Now if we can get this bill approved by the House of Representatives, and signed into law by the governor, the state policy will be clear that children are to be protected with car seats up to the age of six."

No Safe Amount of Alcohol for Drivers

While there is no “safe” amount of alcohol for drivers to consume, most people can drink moderately and drive legally when they reach the legal limit of .08 BAC. A 170-pound male typically would have to consume more than four drinks in one hour on an empty stomach to reach a BAC of .08. A 135-pound female typically would have to consume three drinks in the same time frame.
